growing.

Located on a former quarry in River Bluffs Park, “Growing” is a live-work residency designed for a botanist who is a collector of seeds and plants. The exterior shell of the house is made of polycarbonate and acts as a greenhouse for the plants that are hung from the structural beams supporting the roof and growing on the outdoor space on the second floor.

The circulation is split so that each half of the house is dedicated to living and working respectively, however, where the programs meet, they are partitioned with a wall of resin cast seeds to embed the collector’s passions as a visual transition between the programs.

surrounding textures.

As the house is situated on a former limestone quarry, the project seeks to highlight the natural textures of the surrounding area. The house is pressed against the west wall of the quarry wall for privacy from the main public trail but also to create an intimate moment as the entrance hallway of the property flows along this wall’s surface. The nesting nature of the house also allows the collector to engage with the natural rock flooring while circulating the outside perimeter of the first shell of the house.
